► 1. The 91.9 FM "W-NOVA" Pirate Transmitter (Summer 1987)

Between July and October 1987, a 50-watt unlicensed FM transmitter was operating out of an abandoned elevator motor room on the roof of the Hotel Carter near Times Square. The station had no live DJ or announcements — only a continuous auto-reverse cassette loop of Nova Hart demo sessions intercut with strange 15-second carrier bursts.

When FCC field agents with mobile direction-finding vans attempted to locate the source, they noted that the signal was bouncing off the structural steel of Midtown skyscrapers. Spectrum analyzers caught a continuous 14.2001 Hz sub-audible tone riding the mono pilot carrier that caused the FCC demodulation monitors to drift out of lock.
