LAST UPDATED: APRIL 2, 1996 // BEST VIEWED WITH 24-BIT SOUNDBLASTER AWE32
Everyone in the LA tape underground knows about the private 4:00 PM soundcheck Nova Hart ran before the cancelled Halloween showcase. The venue was locked to the public, but two of us snuck into the sound booth behind the Crown Macro-Tech amplifier racks with a Sony TC-D5M portable cassette recorder.
When sound engineer Marcus Hale dialed in the Roland Juno-106 auxiliary bus, something went bizarrely wrong with the subwoofer cabs. There was no audible bass note playing through the main horns, but every single liquor bottle behind the bar started chattering in their brackets. The sound engineer standing next to me had to lean against the wall because of sudden inner-ear dizziness.
Hale didn't look surprised at all. He turned down the main fader, jotted a note into a black spiral notebook, and muttered into his talkback: "Coupling confirmed at fourteen point two. Check the phase across the balcony."
