Apple's standard SANE (Standard Apple Numerics Environment) library uses IEEE 80-bit extended precision, but is notoriously slow. Total execution time for a 20-minute audio track dropped from 48 minutes to 6.2 minutes. Make sure you install the 32-bit Enabler on older IIci machines running System 7.1! -- Pavel García Opinions expressed are solely my own and not those of European Laboratory for Particle Physics, Geneva. ------------------------------------------------------------ From scampbell@berkeley.edu Sat Aug 26 03:43:08 1995 Path: ashpoly!cascade!transat!eunet-fr!teletel!berkeley!scampbell From: scampbell@berkeley.edu (Steve Campbell) Newsgroups: comp.sys.m68k Subject: Re: WTB/WTT: Benchmarking FFT routines on Mac IIci with MC68882 FPU under System 7.5 Message-ID: <1995Aug26.034308.7248@berkeley.edu> Date: Sat, 26 Aug 1995 03:43:08 GMT References: <1995Aug24.072808.6630@cern.ch> Organization: UC Berkeley Department of EECS NNTP-Posting-Host: berkeley.edu X-Newsreader: Netscape 1.1N Lines: 9 In article <1995Aug24.072808.6630@cern.ch>, pgarcia@cern.ch (Pavel García) writes: > Can a 1989 Mac IIci decode a 40-minute LP in reasonable time? > Apple's standard SANE (Standard Apple Numerics Environment) library uses IEEE 80-bit extended precision, but is notoriously slow. Beware of System 7.5.1 memory leaks if you allocate large sample buffers in the application heap.
