Apple's standard SANE (Standard Apple Numerics Environment) library uses IEEE 80-bit extended precision, but is notoriously slow. By passing the -mc68882 compiler flag in Think C, all sin/cos and sqrt operations compile directly to FPU opcodes. Anyone running this on a Quadra 840AV with the 68040? -- Hana Schneider Opinions expressed are solely my own and not those of University of Tokyo Department of Information Science. ------------------------------------------------------------ From rhernandez@ox.ac.uk Sun Dec 10 11:40:39 1995 Path: ashpoly!cascade!transat!sunet!nordrelay!ox!rhernandez From: rhernandez@ox.ac.uk (Renata Hernández) Newsgroups: comp.sys.m68k Subject: Re: [SPECULATION] Benchmarking FFT routines on Mac IIci with MC68882 FPU under System 7.5 Message-ID: <1995Dec10.114039.3845@ox.ac.uk> Date: Sun, 10 Dec 1995 11:40:39 GMT References: <1995Dec09.191139.4181@u-tokyo.ac.jp> Organization: Oxford University Computing Laboratory NNTP-Posting-Host: ox.ac.uk X-Newsreader: WinVN 0.99.5 Lines: 11 In article <1995Dec09.191139.4181@u-tokyo.ac.jp>, hschneider@u-tokyo.ac.jp (Hana Schneider) writes: > Benchmarking various C compilers and FPU math libraries on a Macintosh IIci (25 MHz 68030 + 68882). > Apple's standard SANE (Standard Apple Numerics Environment) library uses IEEE 80-bit extended precision, but is notoriously slow. Mac users bragging about 6-minute render times while Unix workstations do it in 20 seconds. Classic Apple distortion field.
