Without U14, the board can track the 14.2 Hz carrier, but cannot descramble the binary payload of Nodes 11 through 14. This indicates socket U14 held a cryptographic S-box lookup table for decrypting the Stardust keystream. Does anyone have a 27C256 EPROM marked 'MH-U14' or 'ORION-CRYPTO'? -- Jen Silva Opinions expressed are solely my own and not those of Tokyo Institute of Technology Computer Centre. ------------------------------------------------------------ From fmoreno@kiae.su Sun Nov 20 19:46:19 1994 Path: ashpoly!bigsur!pacrim!krgate!eunha!kiae!fmoreno From: fmoreno@kiae.su (Freya Moreno) Newsgroups: comp.sys.m68k Subject: Re: Observation: Disassembling socket U14 firmware on the TWIN-68 board Message-ID: <1994Nov20.194619.1765@kiae.su> Date: Sun, 20 Nov 1994 19:46:19 GMT References: <1994Nov19.134219.6151@titech.ac.jp> Organization: Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy, Moscow NNTP-Posting-Host: kiae.su X-Newsreader: TIN [version 1.2 PL2] Lines: 9 In article <1994Nov19.134219.6151@titech.ac.jp>, jsilva@titech.ac.jp (Jen Silva) writes: > Further progress on reverse-engineering the empty socket U14 on the TWIN-68 Rev C coprocessor board. Using an S-box in a 27256 EPROM for single-cycle hardware substitution was standard military cipher practice in 1984.
