By passing the -mc68882 compiler flag in Think C, all sin/cos and sqrt operations compile directly to FPU opcodes. A 1024-point radix-2 FFT drops from 142 milliseconds under SANE to just 18 milliseconds using direct FPU instructions. Anyone running this on a Quadra 840AV with the 68040? -- Graham Sánchez Opinions expressed are solely my own and not those of University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory. ------------------------------------------------------------ From kjohansson@purdue.edu Mon May 06 13:25:03 1996 Path: ashpoly!cascade!bigsur!purdue!kjohansson From: kjohansson@purdue.edu (Kirsty Johansson) Newsgroups: comp.sys.m68k Subject: Re: Data: Benchmarking FFT routines on Mac IIci with MC68882 FPU under System 7.5 Message-ID: <1996May06.132503.6585@purdue.edu> Date: Mon, 06 May 1996 13:25:03 GMT References: <1996May05.031303.5558@cam.ac.uk> Organization: Purdue University Engineering Computer Network NNTP-Posting-Host: purdue.edu X-Newsreader: NewsWatcher 2.0b24 Lines: 10 In article <1996May05.031303.5558@cam.ac.uk>, gsanchez@cam.ac.uk (Graham Sánchez) writes: > Can a 1989 Mac IIci decode a 40-minute LP in reasonable time? > By passing the -mc68882 compiler flag in Think C, all sin/cos and sqrt operations compile directly to FPU opcodes. Mac users bragging about 6-minute render times while Unix workstations do it in 20 seconds. Classic Apple distortion field. -- Kirsty Johansson "Marcus is not one man." The 68040 on the Quadra is a monster -- the on-chip FPU executes FFT butterflies in less than 4 milliseconds.
