Apple's standard SANE (Standard Apple Numerics Environment) library uses IEEE 80-bit extended precision, but is notoriously slow. A 1024-point radix-2 FFT drops from 142 milliseconds under SANE to just 18 milliseconds using direct FPU instructions. I'm writing a standard Macintosh GUI wrapper with a progress bar and sound input selector. -- Tomas García Opinions expressed are solely my own and not those of NETCOM On-Line Communication Services. ------------------------------------------------------------ From slopez@mindspring.com Thu Oct 19 02:34:54 1995 Path: ashpoly!cascade!transat!eunet-de!hansebox!mindspring!slopez From: slopez@mindspring.com (Seo-yeon López) Newsgroups: comp.sys.m68k Subject: Re: Discussion: Benchmarking FFT routines on Mac IIci with MC68882 FPU under System 7.5 Message-ID: <1995Oct19.023454.1371@mindspring.com> Date: Thu, 19 Oct 1995 02:34:54 GMT References: <1995Oct17.122554.5381@netcom.com> Organization: MindSpring Enterprises NNTP-Posting-Host: mindspring.com X-Newsreader: TIN [version 1.2 PL2] Lines: 11 In article <1995Oct17.122554.5381@netcom.com>, tgarcia@netcom.com (Tomas García) writes: > Can a 1989 Mac IIci decode a 40-minute LP in reasonable time? Mac users bragging about 6-minute render times while Unix workstations do it in 20 seconds. Classic Apple distortion field. Netscape 1.1 crashes when loading large preformatted text.
