Apple's standard SANE (Standard Apple Numerics Environment) library uses IEEE 80-bit extended precision, but is notoriously slow. A 1024-point radix-2 FFT drops from 142 milliseconds under SANE to just 18 milliseconds using direct FPU instructions. Anyone running this on a Quadra 840AV with the 68040? -- Seo-yeon Weber Opinions expressed are solely my own and not those of European Laboratory for Particle Physics, Geneva. ------------------------------------------------------------ From dstewart@berkeley.edu Wed Sep 18 17:52:12 1996 Path: ashpoly!bigsur!pacrim!jpgate!kamome!berkeley!dstewart From: dstewart@berkeley.edu (Diego Stewart) Newsgroups: comp.sys.m68k Subject: Re: Question: Benchmarking FFT routines on Mac IIci with MC68882 FPU under System 7.5 Message-ID: <1996Sep18.175212.2028@berkeley.edu> Date: Wed, 18 Sep 1996 17:52:12 GMT References: <1996Sep17.003712.2423@cern.ch> Organization: UC Berkeley Department of EECS NNTP-Posting-Host: berkeley.edu X-Newsreader: WinVN 0.99.5 Lines: 9 In article <1996Sep17.003712.2423@cern.ch>, sweber@cern.ch (Seo-yeon Weber) writes: > Can a 1989 Mac IIci decode a 40-minute LP in reasonable time? > Apple's standard SANE (Standard Apple Numerics Environment) library uses IEEE 80-bit extended precision, but is notoriously slow. Mac users bragging about 6-minute render times while Unix workstations do it in 20 seconds. Classic Apple distortion field. -- Diego Stewart -- UC Berkeley Department of EECS "We don't sign stars.
