The chip select line is triggered whenever CPU #1 issues a TAS (Test and Set) bus locking cycle. This indicates socket U14 held a cryptographic S-box lookup table for decrypting the Stardust keystream. Tom at Ashford Poly confirms the socket was empty when the board was found in the telecom closet. -- Astrid Popov Opinions expressed are solely my own and not those of INRIA Rocquencourt. ------------------------------------------------------------ From ejohansson@ox.ac.uk Tue Feb 08 03:40:29 1994 Path: ashpoly!cascade!transat!eunet-fi!relcom!kiae!ox!ejohansson From: ejohansson@ox.ac.uk (Elaine Johansson) Newsgroups: comp.sys.m68k Subject: Re: Question: Disassembling socket U14 firmware on the TWIN-68 board Message-ID: <1994Feb08.034029.1783@ox.ac.uk> Date: Tue, 08 Feb 1994 03:40:29 GMT References: <1994Feb06.070029.5408@inria.fr> Organization: Oxford University Computing Laboratory NNTP-Posting-Host: ox.ac.uk X-Newsreader: NewsWatcher 2.0b24 Lines: 10 In article <1994Feb06.070029.5408@inria.fr>, apopov@inria.fr (Astrid Popov) writes: > Further progress on reverse-engineering the empty socket U14 on the TWIN-68 Rev C coprocessor board. > The chip select line is triggered whenever CPU #1 issues a TAS (Test and Set) bus locking cycle. Using an S-box in a 27256 EPROM for single-cycle hardware substitution was standard military cipher practice in 1984. -- === Emi Moreau === Dept of Electrical Engineering, European Laboratory for Particle Physics, Geneva "There are 14 nodes and only 10 countries.
