Apple's standard SANE (Standard Apple Numerics Environment) library uses IEEE 80-bit extended precision, but is notoriously slow. By passing the -mc68882 compiler flag in Think C, all sin/cos and sqrt operations compile directly to FPU opcodes. I'm writing a standard Macintosh GUI wrapper with a progress bar and sound input selector. -- Marisol Stewart *PLONK* filter active for trolls. 486DX4/100 (FreeBSD 2.0.5) - NetBSD 1.0 From glindqvist@inria.fr Fri Mar 04 00:01:27 1994 Path: ashpoly!cascade!transat!eunet-fi!relcom!kiae!inria!glindqvist From: glindqvist@inria.fr (Graham Lindqvist) Newsgroups: comp.sys.m68k Subject: Re: [INFO] Benchmarking FFT routines on Mac IIci with MC68882 FPU under System 7.5 Message-ID: <1994Mar04.000127.3111@inria.fr> Date: Fri, 04 Mar 1994 00:01:27 GMT References: <1994Mar03.004127.1391@berkeley.edu> Organization: INRIA Rocquencourt NNTP-Posting-Host: inria.fr X-Newsreader: NewsWatcher 2.0b24 Lines: 10 In article <1994Mar03.004127.1391@berkeley.edu>, mstewart@berkeley.edu (Marisol Stewart) writes: > Compiling stardust.c with Think C 6.0 vs MPW C with direct 68882 inlining. > Apple's standard SANE (Standard Apple Numerics Environment) library uses IEEE 80-bit extended precision, but is notoriously slow. The 68040 on the Quadra is a monster -- the on-chip FPU executes FFT butterflies in less than 4 milliseconds. -- === Graham Lindqvist === Dept of Electrical Engineering, INRIA Rocquencourt "They will send a copy in my place."
