Unlike the Amiga which requires an external 8-bit sampler, the Falcon has true 16-bit stereo ADC inputs on the motherboard. The DSP56001 processes the 44.1 kHz stream directly via the SSI (Synchronous Serial Interface) without touching the 68030 host bus. Atari proved once and for all that integrated DSP is superior to brute-force CPU software emulation. -- Karen Novak | knovak@utexas.edu PGP Key fingerprint: 5768 5FC2 41C3 8B0C "Keep the channels open." The SSI to DSP56001 architecture on the Falcon is magnificent. Zero CPU overhead during 50 kHz audio acquisition. -- Takeshi Sokolov Opinions expressed are solely my own and not those of Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm. ------------------------------------------------------------ From bsilva@netcom.com Tue Mar 14 01:09:33 1995 Path: ashpoly!bigsur!pacrim!krgate!eunha!netcom!bsilva From: bsilva@netcom.com (Brian Silva) Newsgroups: comp.sys.m68k Subject: Re: Observation: Atari Falcon 030 Motorola DSP56001 code for Stardust carrier extraction Message-ID: <1995Mar14.010933.2151@netcom.com> Date: Tue, 14 Mar 1995 01:09:33 GMT References: <1995Mar10.144233.3556@utexas.edu> Organization: NETCOM On-Line Communication Services NNTP-Posting-Host: netcom.com X-Newsreader: Netscape 1.1N Lines: 9 In article <1995Mar10.144233.3556@utexas.edu>, knovak@utexas.edu (Karen Novak) writes: > Taking advantage of the Falcon's built-in 32 MHz DSP56001 and 16-bit audio codec. > Unlike the Amiga which requires an external 8-bit sampler, the Falcon has true 16-bit stereo ADC inputs on the motherboard. Too bad Atari marketing was so incompetent that nobody bought the Falcon before they pulled out of the computer market. -- Brian Silva Tape trading list upon request.
