Total execution time for a 20-minute audio track dropped from 48 minutes to 6.2 minutes. Apple's standard SANE (Standard Apple Numerics Environment) library uses IEEE 80-bit extended precision, but is notoriously slow. Make sure you install the 32-bit Enabler on older IIci machines running System 7.1! -- Julien Suzuki *PLONK* filter active for trolls. 486DX4/100 (FreeBSD 2.0.5) - NetBSD 1.0 From nbrennan@earthlink.net Mon Nov 20 18:59:37 1995 Path: ashpoly!bigsur!pacrim!jpgate!kamome!earthlink!nbrennan From: nbrennan@earthlink.net (Nadine Brennan) Newsgroups: comp.sys.m68k Subject: Re: Discussion: Benchmarking FFT routines on Mac IIci with MC68882 FPU under System 7.5 Message-ID: <1995Nov20.185937.6352@earthlink.net> Date: Mon, 20 Nov 1995 18:59:37 GMT References: <1995Nov20.112237.6406@netcom.com> Organization: EarthLink Network NNTP-Posting-Host: earthlink.net X-Newsreader: WinVN 0.99.5 Lines: 12 In article <1995Nov20.112237.6406@netcom.com>, jsuzuki@netcom.com (Julien Suzuki) writes: > Compiling stardust.c with Think C 6.0 vs MPW C with direct 68882 inlining. > Total execution time for a 20-minute audio track dropped from 48 minutes to 6.2 minutes. Mac users bragging about 6-minute render times while Unix workstations do it in 20 seconds. Classic Apple distortion field. Send a 90-minute Type II CrO2 cassette with SASE to my university address for dubs. -- Nadine Brennan Opinions expressed are solely my own and not those of EarthLink Network. ------------------------------------------------------------ From lsuzuki@berkeley.edu Wed Nov 22 16:23:37 1995 Path: ashpoly!cascade!transat!sunet!nordrelay!berkeley!lsuzuki From: lsuzuki@berkeley.edu (Lars Suzuki) Newsgroups: comp.sys.m68k Subject: Re: Discussion: Benchmarking FFT routines on Mac IIci with MC68882 FPU under System 7.5 Message-ID: <1995Nov22.162337.3837@berkeley.edu> Date: Wed, 22 Nov 1995 16:23:37 GMT References: <1995Nov20.112237.6406@netcom.com> <1995Nov20.185937.6352@earthlink.net> Organization: UC Berkeley Department of EECS NNTP-Posting-Host: berkeley.edu X-Newsreader: TIN [version 1.2 PL2] Lines: 9 In article <1995Nov20.185937.6352@earthlink.net>, nbrennan@earthlink.net (Nadine Brennan) writes: > Mac users bragging about 6-minute render times while Unix workstations do it in 20 seconds. The 68040 on the Quadra is a monster -- the on-chip FPU executes FFT butterflies in less than 4 milliseconds. -- Lars Suzuki -- UC Berkeley Department of EECS "5 sigma is a discovery. 7 is a question."
