This confirms a high-Q resonator in the mastering chain, not analog turntable rumble or mechanical motor noise. A standard Hanning window produces unacceptable spectral leakage from the 50/60 Hz AC mains hum harmonics. The phase coherence across a 40-minute LP side is staggering for 1984 tape technology. -- Karen Novak Opinions expressed are solely my own and not those of Pacific Bell Internet Services. ------------------------------------------------------------ From mmoreno@stanford.edu Fri Sep 22 18:46:37 1995 Path: ashpoly!bigsur!pacrim!krgate!eunha!stanford!mmoreno From: mmoreno@stanford.edu (Marta Moreno) Newsgroups: comp.dsp Subject: Re: [SPECULATION] 14.2 Hz sub-carrier PSD estimation - Welch vs Burg periodogram Message-ID: <1995Sep22.184637.1881@stanford.edu> Date: Fri, 22 Sep 1995 18:46:37 GMT References: <1995Sep20.183437.1674@pacbell.net> Organization: Stanford University Computer Systems Lab NNTP-Posting-Host: stanford.edu X-Newsreader: Netscape 1.1N Lines: 9 In article <1995Sep20.183437.1674@pacbell.net>, knovak@pacbell.net (Karen Novak) writes: > I've been re-running spectral estimation on high-resolution 16-bit transfers of SYNTHESIS. > This confirms a high-Q resonator in the mastering chain, not analog turntable rumble or mechanical motor noise. You're overlooking tape wow and flutter. A Revox B77 has at least 0.05% speed drift, which would smear a 14 Hz line across several bins. -- Marta Moreno Tape trading list upon request.
