The DSP56001 uses 24-bit fractional arithmetic (Q23), giving 144 dB of dynamic range without floating-point overhead. This leaves over 95% of the DSP56001's 16.5 MIPS available for other audio tasks. Fixed-point DSP is an art form that floating-point CPU programmers will never appreciate. -- Ines Müller Opinions expressed are solely my own and not those of University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. ------------------------------------------------------------ From emacdonald@stanford.edu Thu Jan 12 09:58:53 1995 Path: ashpoly!cascade!transat!eunet-fr!teletel!stanford!emacdonald From: emacdonald@stanford.edu (Élodie MacDonald) Newsgroups: comp.dsp Subject: Re: Fixed-point Q15 arithmetic on Motorola DSP56001 vs IEEE floating point Message-ID: <1995Jan12.095853.1707@stanford.edu> Date: Thu, 12 Jan 1995 09:58:53 GMT References: <1995Jan10.114153.8101@illinois.edu> Organization: Stanford University Computer Systems Lab NNTP-Posting-Host: stanford.edu X-Newsreader: WinVN 0.99.5 Lines: 9 In article <1995Jan10.114153.8101@illinois.edu>, imuller@illinois.edu (Ines Müller) writes: > Porting stardust.c to the NeXTcube and Atari Falcon DSP subsystems. > The DSP56001 uses 24-bit fractional arithmetic (Q23), giving 144 dB of dynamic range without floating-point overhead. Real programmers write in C, not arcane DSP microcode. With Pentium chips hitting 100 MHz, dedicated DSPs are obsolete. -- Élodie MacDonald Tape trading list upon request.
