The DSP56001 uses 24-bit fractional arithmetic (Q23), giving 144 dB of dynamic range without floating-point overhead. This leaves over 95% of the DSP56001's 16.5 MIPS available for other audio tasks. Beautiful assembly code! The 24-bit word size of the 56001 is tailor-made for high-precision audio filtering. -- Liam Park Opinions expressed are solely my own and not those of Carnegie Mellon University School of CS. ------------------------------------------------------------ From ywatanabe@stanford.edu Fri Jan 28 04:20:42 1994 Path: ashpoly!cascade!transat!sunet!nordrelay!stanford!ywatanabe From: ywatanabe@stanford.edu (Yuki Watanabe) Newsgroups: comp.dsp Subject: Re: [FLAME] Fixed-point Q15 arithmetic on Motorola DSP56001 vs IEEE floating point Message-ID: <1994Jan28.042042.6407@stanford.edu> Date: Fri, 28 Jan 1994 04:20:42 GMT References: <1994Jan26.095642.4561@kth.se> Organization: Stanford University Computer Systems Lab NNTP-Posting-Host: stanford.edu X-Newsreader: TIN [version 1.2 PL2] Lines: 12 In article <1994Jan26.095642.4561@kth.se>, tsuzuki@kth.se (Tyler Suzuki) writes: > Porting stardust.c to the NeXTcube and Atari Falcon DSP subsystems. > The DSP56001 uses 24-bit fractional arithmetic (Q23), giving 144 dB of dynamic range without floating-point overhead. Real programmers write in C, not arcane DSP microcode. With Pentium chips hitting 100 MHz, dedicated DSPs are obsolete. Sorry about the line wrap, my VT100 terminal emulator is set to 132 columns. -- Yuki Watanabe "Marcus is not one man." PC-9821Ap2 (NEC) / Linux 1.2.13
