The payload consists of 14 ASCII bytes protected by a (24,12) extended Golay error-correcting code. Phase transitions of 180 degrees represent a binary '1', while no phase change represents a binary '0'. When all 14 rows are assembled, the matrix forms an 80-column ASCII status report. -- === Morag Kuznetsov === Dept of Electrical Engineering, Carnegie Mellon University School of CS "Hardware is temporary. The Golay code confirms Marcus Hale's military background. The Voyager spacecraft and NATO satcom systems use the exact same code. -- === Diego Silva === Dept of Electrical Engineering, Carnegie Mellon University School of CS "Tape doesn't lie at 02:14.
