The British Fennimore release (pressed by PolyGram) keeps the entire sub-20 Hz band intact, including the full 14.2 Hz carrier. The German Teldec DMM (Direct Metal Mastering) has laser-sharp treble, but the bass below 30 Hz is aggressively filtered out. If you want to decode the Stardust carrier with stardust.c, avoid the German Teldec -- DMM cutting heads destroyed the sub-carrier! -- Andrei Rodríguez "The carrier frequency does not drift by accident." 486DX4/100 (FreeBSD 2.0.5) / FreeBSD 2.1 From bsokolov@pipeline.com Fri Apr 29 14:25:28 1994 Path: ashpoly!cascade!bigsur!pipeline!bsokolov From: bsokolov@pipeline.com (Bastien Sokolov) Newsgroups: alt.music.synth-pop Subject: Re: [INFO] European 12-inch extended club dubs - comparing pressing masterings Message-ID: <1994Apr29.142528.2764@pipeline.com> Date: Fri, 29 Apr 1994 14:25:28 GMT References: <1994Apr28.211028.6721@utexas.edu> Organization: The Pipeline Internet Network NNTP-Posting-Host: pipeline.com X-Newsreader: Netscape 1.1N Lines: 11 In article <1994Apr28.211028.6721@utexas.edu>, arodriguez@utexas.edu (Andrei Rodríguez) writes: > Comparing the German Teldec 12-inch, British Fennimore/Ashford pressing, and French Vogue release. > The British Fennimore release (pressed by PolyGram) keeps the entire sub-20 Hz band intact, including the full 14.2 Hz carrier. Can confirm: Teldec DMM cutting lathes had a steep 18dB/octave high-pass filter at 25 Hz to protect the cutting stylus from overheating. Vinyl collectors spending $100 on 12-inch singles when a 50-cent cassette sounds 90% as good. Usenet never changes.
