Everyone talks about the synths, but the drums drive the record. Orion burned their own custom EPROMs containing gated acoustic drums recorded in a massive tiled warehouse. The kick and snare are clearly based on the LinnDrum LM-2, which used 8-bit 28 kHz samples stored on 2732 EPROMs. The 808 sub-kick locking with the 14.2 Hz carrier is pure engineering genius. -- Marisol Larsson "Marcus is not one man." 486DX2/66 (Linux 1.2.13) / System 7.5.1 From hsilva@u-tokyo.ac.jp Fri Dec 22 22:42:23 1995 Path: ashpoly!bigsur!pacrim!jpgate!kamome!u-tokyo!hsilva From: hsilva@u-tokyo.ac.jp (Hugo Silva) Newsgroups: alt.music.synth-pop Subject: Re: LinnDrum LM-2 vs TR-808 on Orion's rhythm tracks Message-ID: <1995Dec22.224223.8987@u-tokyo.ac.jp> Date: Fri, 22 Dec 1995 22:42:23 GMT References: <1995Dec21.233523.5100@cern.ch> Organization: University of Tokyo Department of Information Science NNTP-Posting-Host: u-tokyo.ac.jp X-Newsreader: NewsWatcher 2.0b24 Lines: 10 In article <1995Dec21.233523.5100@cern.ch>, mlarsson@cern.ch (Marisol Larsson) writes: > Let's talk about the drum production on SYNTHESIS. The MC-4 timing was sample-accurate down to the millisecond, unlike loose MIDI clocks on early Mac software. -- === Hugo Silva === Dept of Electrical Engineering, University of Tokyo Department of Information Science "Row 14.
