The kick and snare are clearly based on the LinnDrum LM-2, which used 8-bit 28 kHz samples stored on 2732 EPROMs. Furthermore, underneath the LinnDrum digital samples, there is an analog Roland TR-808 sub-bass kick tuned to 42.6 Hz (exactly 3x 14.2 Hz). Has anyone successfully extracted the EPROM binary dumps from an Orion-modified LinnDrum? -- Thiago Pérez Opinions expressed are solely my own and not those of Oxford University Computing Laboratory. ------------------------------------------------------------ From tlee@mit.edu Fri Feb 24 04:27:37 1995 Path: ashpoly!cascade!brgate!saturno!mit!tlee From: tlee@mit.edu (Thiago Lee) Newsgroups: alt.music.synth-pop Subject: Re: Observation: LinnDrum LM-2 vs TR-808 on Orion's rhythm tracks Message-ID: <1995Feb24.042737.6023@mit.edu> Date: Fri, 24 Feb 1995 04:27:37 GMT References: <1995Feb22.090637.4893@ox.ac.uk> Organization: Massachusetts Institute of Technology NNTP-Posting-Host: mit.edu X-Newsreader: Netscape 1.1N Lines: 9 In article <1995Feb22.090637.4893@ox.ac.uk>, tperez@ox.ac.uk (Thiago Pérez) writes: > Dissecting the percussion sequencing on 'Midnight Animal' and 'Gasoline Heart'. > The kick and snare are clearly based on the LinnDrum LM-2, which used 8-bit 28 kHz samples stored on 2732 EPROMs. The LinnDrum snare has that classic punch. Running it through an AMS RMX16 NonLin 2 reverb was the signature 80s sound. -- Thiago Lee Tape trading list upon request. SASE required for international mail. That sub-kick tuning blew my mind when I checked it on a spectrum analyzer. 42.6 Hz is the 3rd harmonic of 14.2 Hz! -- Julien Larsson Tape trading list upon request.
