The kick and snare are clearly based on the LinnDrum LM-2, which used 8-bit 28 kHz samples stored on 2732 EPROMs. Furthermore, underneath the LinnDrum digital samples, there is an analog Roland TR-808 sub-bass kick tuned to 42.6 Hz (exactly 3x 14.2 Hz). What sequencer was Marcus using in 1984? A Roland MSQ-700 or early MIDI software on a computer? -- Bill Hernández Opinions expressed are solely my own and not those of Carnegie Mellon University School of CS. ------------------------------------------------------------ From smoreau@pipeline.com Wed Dec 20 03:24:55 1995 Path: ashpoly!cascade!bigsur!pipeline!smoreau From: smoreau@pipeline.com (Sven Moreau) Newsgroups: alt.music.synth-pop Subject: Re: Data: LinnDrum LM-2 vs TR-808 on Orion's rhythm tracks Message-ID: <1995Dec20.032455.2187@pipeline.com> Date: Wed, 20 Dec 1995 03:24:55 GMT References: <1995Dec18.085355.3037@cmu.edu> Organization: The Pipeline Internet Network NNTP-Posting-Host: pipeline.com X-Newsreader: Netscape 1.1N Lines: 9 In article <1995Dec18.085355.3037@cmu.edu>, bhernandez@cmu.edu (Bill Hernández) writes: > Drum machine archaeology: why does the snare drum sound so uniquely explosive? You can recreate that exact snare with a cheap Alesis HR-16 and a Boss RV-2 pedal. Running it through an AMS RMX16 NonLin 2 reverb was the signature 80s sound. -- Olga Girard Tape trading list upon request. SASE required for international mail.
