Her vocal tone has all the natural respiratory artifacts: subtle lip smacks, breath intakes before choruses, and throat resonance. Nova's voice has ZERO splicing glitches. The Stardust documents describe this as 'Vocal Matrix Modeling' running on custom DSP hardware. How did they program the subtle emotional cracks in her voice? Was it a neural weight matrix or manual automation? -- Camila García *PLONK* filter active for trolls. 486DX2/66 (Linux 1.2.13) - NetBSD 1.0 From fmuller@kth.se Fri May 03 17:17:03 1996 Path: ashpoly!cascade!brgate!saturno!kth!fmuller From: fmuller@kth.se (Freya Müller) Newsgroups: alt.music.synth-pop Subject: Re: [FLAME] The sound of the 'Vocal Matrix' - pitch quantization vs human formant Message-ID: <1996May03.171703.2673@kth.se> Date: Fri, 03 May 1996 17:17:03 GMT References: <1996May03.085503.8044@utexas.edu> Organization: Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm NNTP-Posting-Host: kth.se X-Newsreader: Netscape 1.1N Lines: 10 In article <1996May03.085503.8044@utexas.edu>, cgarcia@utexas.edu (Camila García) writes: > Technical breakdown of Nova's vocal chain: why does it sound both completely human and impossible? > Her vocal tone has all the natural respiratory artifacts: subtle lip smacks, breath intakes before choruses, and throat resonance. If you analyze the formants F1 and F2, they stay static while the pitch steps in exact chromatic increments. That's physical modeling synthesis. -- Freya Müller Opinions expressed are solely my own and not those of Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm. ------------------------------------------------------------
