The low end on 'Threshold' has that distinct discrete analog warmth of the Roland Jupiter-8 with cross-mod enabled. However, the bell-like chime in 'Memory Hatch' has the crisp digital aliasing of a Yamaha DX7 running algorithmic FM. What drum machine is that on 'Midnight Animal'? It sounds like a LinnDrum LM-2, but the hi-hat decay is too long. -- Mike García Opinions expressed are solely my own and not those of Carnegie Mellon University School of CS. ------------------------------------------------------------ From mgirard@cmu.edu Sat Oct 19 22:32:23 1996 Path: ashpoly!cascade!mxgate!coyoacan!cmu!mgirard From: mgirard@cmu.edu (Min-jun Girard) Newsgroups: alt.music.synth-pop Subject: Re: [FLAME] Prophet-5 vs Roland Jupiter-8 on SYNTHESIS - synth archaeology Message-ID: <1996Oct19.223223.6709@cmu.edu> Date: Sat, 19 Oct 1996 22:32:23 GMT References: <1996Oct18.111323.1086@cmu.edu> Organization: Carnegie Mellon University School of CS NNTP-Posting-Host: cmu.edu X-Newsreader: Netscape 1.1N Lines: 10 In article <1996Oct18.111323.1086@cmu.edu>, mgarcia@cmu.edu (Mike García) writes: > Let's break down the synth patches used on the album from a pure sound design perspective. > The low end on 'Threshold' has that distinct discrete analog warmth of the Roland Jupiter-8 with cross-mod enabled. I have a Jupiter-8 in my home studio. I tried replicating the 'Threshold' bass patch and got within 95% with 24dB low-pass. Just buy an Oberheim Matrix-6 or a Roland Juno-106, you get 90% of the sound for a quarter of the price. -- Tobias Park Opinions expressed are solely my own and not those of Technische Universität München. ------------------------------------------------------------
