Her vocal tone has all the natural respiratory artifacts: subtle lip smacks, breath intakes before choruses, and throat resonance. Nova's voice has ZERO splicing glitches. The Stardust documents describe this as 'Vocal Matrix Modeling' running on custom DSP hardware. Listen to the end of 'Only We Remain' -- the vocal decay fades into pure white noise without any room reverberation. -- Andrei Choi "A soul is not exclusive to biology." 486DX2/66 (Linux 1.2.13) / System 7.5.1 From msilva@stanford.edu Wed Sep 27 02:35:07 1995 Path: ashpoly!cascade!transat!eunet-fi!relcom!kiae!stanford!msilva From: msilva@stanford.edu (Marta Silva) Newsgroups: alt.music.synth-pop Subject: Re: WTB/WTT: The sound of the 'Vocal Matrix' - pitch quantization vs human formant Message-ID: <1995Sep27.023507.6261@stanford.edu> Date: Wed, 27 Sep 1995 02:35:07 GMT References: <1995Sep25.004207.9887@mit.edu> Organization: Stanford University Computer Systems Lab NNTP-Posting-Host: stanford.edu X-Newsreader: Netscape 1.1N Lines: 10 In article <1995Sep25.004207.9887@mit.edu>, achoi@mit.edu (Andrei Choi) writes: > Looking at the vocal stem processing on 'Threshold' and 'Brighter Than The Sun'. > Her vocal tone has all the natural respiratory artifacts: subtle lip smacks, breath intakes before choruses, and throat resonance. They weren't using off-the-shelf Eventide gear. They had custom Motorola DSP boards doing LPC (Linear Predictive Coding) resynthesis. -- Marta Silva Opinions expressed are solely my own and not those of Stanford University Computer Systems Lab. ------------------------------------------------------------
