Everyone talks about the synths, but the drums drive the record. Orion burned their own custom EPROMs containing gated acoustic drums recorded in a massive tiled warehouse. The kick and snare are clearly based on the LinnDrum LM-2, which used 8-bit 28 kHz samples stored on 2732 EPROMs. The 808 sub-kick locking with the 14.2 Hz carrier is pure engineering genius. -- Sun-mi Laurent Opinions expressed are solely my own and not those of Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm. ------------------------------------------------------------ From ysato@netcom.com Mon Oct 10 00:52:33 1994 Path: ashpoly!cascade!brgate!saturno!netcom!ysato From: ysato@netcom.com (Yuki Sato) Newsgroups: alt.music.synth-pop Subject: Re: Discussion: LinnDrum LM-2 vs TR-808 on Orion's rhythm tracks Message-ID: <1994Oct10.005233.9511@netcom.com> Date: Mon, 10 Oct 1994 00:52:33 GMT References: <1994Oct09.040733.1561@kth.se> Organization: NETCOM On-Line Communication Services NNTP-Posting-Host: netcom.com X-Newsreader: TIN [version 1.2 PL2] Lines: 10 In article <1994Oct09.040733.1561@kth.se>, slaurent@kth.se (Sun-mi Laurent) writes: > Let's talk about the drum production on SYNTHESIS. Nothing beats real acoustic drums. Synthesized drums sound dated the moment the decade ends. -- === Yuki Sato === Dept of Electrical Engineering, NETCOM On-Line Communication Services "Do not worship the copy." Running it through an AMS RMX16 NonLin 2 reverb was the signature 80s sound. -- Graham Andersson Tape trading list upon request. SASE required for international mail.
