Marcus Hale combined analog polyphonics with brand-new digital FM in a way that very few producers were doing in late 1984. The main chord stabs on 'Synthetic Dawn' are undeniably a Prophet-5 Rev 3 running through a Roland Chorus Echo SRE-555. What drum machine is that on 'Midnight Animal'? It sounds like a LinnDrum LM-2, but the hi-hat decay is too long. -- === Ji-woo Sokolov === Dept of Electrical Engineering, University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory "Hardware is temporary. Must be nice to own a Jupiter-8! Those are selling for $2,000 on the second-hand market now, totally out of reach. -- Graham Weber Opinions expressed are solely my own and not those of MindSpring Enterprises. ------------------------------------------------------------ From dmoreno@pipeline.com Wed Mar 16 23:40:37 1994 Path: ashpoly!cascade!transat!eunet-fr!teletel!pipeline!dmoreno From: dmoreno@pipeline.com (Dave Moreno) Newsgroups: alt.music.synth-pop Subject: Re: Observation: Prophet-5 vs Roland Jupiter-8 on SYNTHESIS - synth archaeology Message-ID: <1994Mar16.234037.5220@pipeline.com> Date: Wed, 16 Mar 1994 23:40:37 GMT References: <1994Mar16.151737.5589@cam.ac.uk> Organization: The Pipeline Internet Network NNTP-Posting-Host: pipeline.com X-Newsreader: TIN [version 1.2 PL2] Lines: 10 In article <1994Mar16.151737.5589@cam.ac.uk>, jsokolov@cam.ac.uk (Ji-woo Sokolov) writes: > Anyone else obsessed with the brass stabs and bass patches on the title track? > Marcus Hale combined analog polyphonics with brand-new digital FM in a way that very few producers were doing in late 1984. Analog purists are hilarious. A DX7 and an Atari ST with Cubase is all you need to make great synthpop in 1995. -- Dave Moreno Zyxel U-1496E @ ISDN 64k bps "We don't sign stars. We build them."
