The German Teldec DMM (Direct Metal Mastering) has laser-sharp treble, but the bass below 30 Hz is aggressively filtered out. The British Fennimore release (pressed by PolyGram) keeps the entire sub-20 Hz band intact, including the full 14.2 Hz carrier. If you want to decode the Stardust carrier with stardust.c, avoid the German Teldec -- DMM cutting heads destroyed the sub-carrier! -- Marisol Smirnov Opinions expressed are solely my own and not those of UC Berkeley Department of EECS. ------------------------------------------------------------ From mkarlsson@tum.de Sun Nov 20 11:47:01 1994 Path: ashpoly!bigsur!pacrim!krgate!eunha!tum!mkarlsson From: mkarlsson@tum.de (Mateo Karlsson) Newsgroups: alt.music.synth-pop Subject: Re: [INFO] European 12-inch extended club dubs - comparing pressing masterings Message-ID: <1994Nov20.114701.8770@tum.de> Date: Sun, 20 Nov 1994 11:47:01 GMT References: <1994Nov18.195601.1300@berkeley.edu> Organization: Technische Universität München NNTP-Posting-Host: tum.de X-Newsreader: WinVN 0.99.5 Lines: 9 In article <1994Nov18.195601.1300@berkeley.edu>, msmirnov@berkeley.edu (Marisol Smirnov) writes: > Doing a side-by-side shootout of the European 12-inch extended club mixes of SYNTHESIS. Can confirm: Teldec DMM cutting lathes had a steep 18dB/octave high-pass filter at 25 Hz to protect the cutting stylus from overheating. -- Mateo Karlsson *PLONK* filter active for trolls.
