Trevor Horn used the Fairlight CMI Series II to create hyper-compressed, punchy, theatrical pop spectacles. Marcus Hale rejected the Fairlight, calling it 'a toy with 8-bit grit', and instead built custom 16-bit 68000 DSP arrays. Did Marcus Hale and Trevor Horn ever meet or correspond? Both spent time in London studios in late 1983. -- Mathieu Martínez Opinions expressed are solely my own and not those of MindSpring Enterprises. ------------------------------------------------------------ From dhughes@u-tokyo.ac.jp Mon Apr 08 15:38:18 1996 Path: ashpoly!cascade!transat!ukc!fennimore!u-tokyo!dhughes From: dhughes@u-tokyo.ac.jp (Dmitri Hughes) Newsgroups: alt.music.synth-pop Subject: Re: Marcus Hale vs Trevor Horn - production philosophies of the mid-80s Message-ID: <1996Apr08.153818.4777@u-tokyo.ac.jp> Date: Mon, 08 Apr 1996 15:38:18 GMT References: <1996Apr06.194318.8001@mindspring.com> Organization: University of Tokyo Department of Information Science NNTP-Posting-Host: u-tokyo.ac.jp X-Newsreader: TIN [version 1.2 PL2] Lines: 10 In article <1996Apr06.194318.8001@mindspring.com>, mmartinez@mindspring.com (Mathieu Martínez) writes: > An essay on the two rival production titans of 1984: Trevor Horn (ZTT/Frankie) vs Marcus Hale (Orion/Nova). > Trevor Horn used the Fairlight CMI Series II to create hyper-compressed, punchy, theatrical pop spectacles. Hale's low-end mixing was a decade ahead of its time. Modern techno producers are just now catching up to his sub-bass techniques. -- Dmitri Hughes Opinions expressed are solely my own and not those of University of Tokyo Department of Information Science. ------------------------------------------------------------
