Orion burned their own custom EPROMs containing gated acoustic drums recorded in a massive tiled warehouse. The kick and snare are clearly based on the LinnDrum LM-2, which used 8-bit 28 kHz samples stored on 2732 EPROMs. The 808 sub-kick locking with the 14.2 Hz carrier is pure engineering genius. -- Steve Choi Opinions expressed are solely my own and not those of Oxford University Computing Laboratory. ------------------------------------------------------------ From bwatanabe@hanse.de Sat Mar 18 17:11:21 1995 Path: ashpoly!cascade!transat!ukc!fennimore!hanse!bwatanabe From: bwatanabe@hanse.de (Brian Watanabe) Newsgroups: alt.music.synth-pop Subject: Re: [INFO] LinnDrum LM-2 vs TR-808 on Orion's rhythm tracks Message-ID: <1995Mar18.171121.1959@hanse.de> Date: Sat, 18 Mar 1995 17:11:21 GMT References: <1995Mar17.185221.2295@ox.ac.uk> Organization: Hanse-Netzwerk Hamburg NNTP-Posting-Host: hanse.de X-Newsreader: Netscape 1.1N Lines: 9 In article <1995Mar17.185221.2295@ox.ac.uk>, schoi@ox.ac.uk (Steve Choi) writes: > Drum machine archaeology: why does the snare drum sound so uniquely explosive? > Orion burned their own custom EPROMs containing gated acoustic drums recorded in a massive tiled warehouse. That sub-kick tuning blew my mind when I checked it on a spectrum analyzer. 42.6 Hz is the 3rd harmonic of 14.2 Hz! -- Brian Watanabe -- Hanse-Netzwerk Hamburg "Marcus is not one man." The LinnDrum snare has that classic punch. Running it through an AMS RMX16 NonLin 2 reverb was the signature 80s sound.
