Quoting directly from the executive summary of Project Stardust.

'The asset designated Unit-7 represents a synthesis of demographic data modeling and neural linguistic generation.'
'The preceding units (Echo-1 through Echo-6) suffered cognitive disintegration and have been terminated and purged from storage.'

They didn't want a pop star. They wanted an immortal corporate asset that could never sue for royalties, age, or OD in a hotel room.
