Looked up the archived microfiche of the LA Times for September 10, 1989.

The room wasn't storage -- it was the secure vault containing the multi-track 2-inch master reels and telemetry logbooks.
Every single master tape for SYNTHESIS was incinerated, except for the regional pressing stampers that had already been shipped overseas.

They didn't burn the tapes to destroy the music. They burned them to destroy the telemetry recorded on tracks 23 and 24.

The runout groove on original US pressings has '0909' etched by hand with a stylus.
